ean-Paul BLAIS ne cherche pas à évoquer, ni à décrire. Seul l’acte créatif importe pour transmettre à la matière le fruit de sa méditation, de son voyage mental. Un acte à chaque fois réinventé en de nouveaux dialogues avec la matière. Pierre Soulages disait à propos du noir qu’il était «…à la fois une couleur et une non-couleur. Mais quand la lumière est réfléchie par l’état de surface du noir, elle le transforme. C’est tout un monde, d’une variété absolue. » De même, Blais considère la lumière comme une matière à exploiter sur ses reliefs en bois noir légèrement courbés. Des rugosités et stries en surface lui permettent de varier les effets, permettant au noir de surgir des ténèbres vers la lumière, et de se transformer de la sorte en couleur lumineuse.

  • 1984The artist starts working with iron
  • 1991Blais shifts towards works on paper
  • 1994The artists starts working with wood and paint, art for which he is most recognized today
  • 2017A short film about Blais’s réalisations by Bertrand NOBS (11minutes) is selected at the MiFAC 2017
  • 2021Jean Paul Blais is exhibited throughout Europe and in Japan, his work is found in many prestigious collections worldwide.
